PM speaks after recognising Palestinian state

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has recognised the state of Palestine.

“This is the world saying that this cycle of violence has to stop. This is a cycle that has gone on now for 80 years,” Albanese said.

He joins the leaders of Canada and the UK in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, during which France and Saudi Arabia will lead further action towards a two-state solution.

Their recognition of Palestinian sovereignty, and demands for ceasefire have landed the nations’ leaders in hot water with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The stance also puts Australia in direct opposition to US President Donald Trump, who Albanese is set to speak with soon.

“The Palestinian authority needs to be democratised and reformed, including in education and legal systems. The world wants to play a role in that,” Albanese said.

“The humanitarian catastrophe that we see rolling out in Gaza has to end.

“We want to see a ceasefire, we want to see hostages released, and we want to see aid be able to get into Gaza.”

Police have seized guns from the wife of alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman.

Several guns were taken from a Porepunkah home, which police confirmed were not used in the deadly shooting of two Victoria Police officers on August 26.

Mali Freeman is a licensed gun owner, but has not been cooperating much with police, Sunrise understands.

A Myrtleford man was also detained during a weapons blitz on the weekend, as police seek out illegal guns as part of an investigation prompted by the double murder.

Charlie Kirk is being farewelled by thousands in a huge funeral service in Arizona, US.

He is being remembered as a father-of-two and a husband, after the Turning Point USA CEO was shot dead during a speaking event at a Utah University this month.

Donald Trump is set to speak at the 70,000 person capacity venue, which is full and sending queuing mourners to a nearby overflow arena.

Upholding Kirk’s conservative movement is one of the main sentiments being expressed by speakers at the event, with many referring to Kirk as a martyr for the movement.
